Airlines With Free Stopovers: Every Program Compared (2026)
Rules on this page last verified 2026-07-09. Airlines change things; we re-check and date it.
You already know one of these exists, probably because a friend mentioned "the Iceland thing" or you saw a headline about a free hotel in Istanbul. What nobody has put in one place is the actual hard-axis comparison: which ones are free, which are just cheap, which need a hotel and which hand you one, and the single rule on each program that voids the whole thing if you miss it. Here it is, one row per airline, every cell sourced.
The short version
| Program | What you get | Max length | Truly free or paid | Free hotel? | Must request when | Min layover | US-origin bonus | Catch | Last verified |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| TAP Air Portugal | Stay in Lisbon or Porto | 10 nights | Free (airfare) | No | During booking, or via stopover page after | N/A (nights-based) | None extra; 25% off a domestic Portugal flight during your stay | Two one-way tickets kill it; OTAs won't show the button | 2026-07-09 |
| Icelandair | Stay in Reykjavik | 7 nights (21 on Flex fares) | Free (airfare) | No | During booking, via the stopover search tool | N/A (nights-based) | None; works from any Icelandair US gateway | Award tickets are murky; Economy Light caps at 3 nights | 2026-07-09 |
| Turkish Airlines | Hotel in Istanbul | 2 nights Economy / 3 Business (US departures) | Free (hotel included) | Yes | After ticketing, 72h before the flight | 20 hours | +1 night vs. most other origins | Must claim it yourself; hotel is assigned, not chosen | 2026-07-09 |
| Qatar Airways | Hotel in Doha, 4 to 5-star | 4 nights | Paid, from $14/night; visa is free | No (from $14/night) | Anytime after booking, before travel | 12 hours | None specific | Not free, just cheap; alcohol is illegal in Qatar | 2026-07-09 |
| Emirates | Hotel, meals, transfers, visa in Dubai | One stay per connection (6-26h window) | Free, if fare clears the floor | Yes | Before travel, via Manage Booking | 6 hours (max 26h) | Americas explicitly listed at $450 one-way / $700 return fare floor | Must be the shortest available connection; codeshares (except Qantas) don't count | 2026-07-09 |
| Singapore Airlines | Hotel + attractions in Singapore | Up to 10 nights per package | Free in Business/First; discounted in Economy | Yes, Business/First only | During booking, or after via singaporeair-holidays.com | As short as 6h (package tiers) | None specific | US pricing not yet confirmed on the US site; Economy gets no free hotel | 2026-07-09 |
| Copa Airlines | Stay in Panama City | 15 days | Free (airfare); ~$50 in Panama taxes | No | At original ticket purchase, not after | N/A (days-based) | None specific; applies broadly to US-South America routings | Add it after buying and it's gone; standard change fees apply | 2026-07-09 |
| Ethiopian Airlines | Hotel, meals, transfers in Addis Ababa | 24 hours (this benefit); 7-day visa-free stay approved but not yet in force | Free | Yes | Claim at origin check-in, or the transit desk at ADD | 8 hours (max 24h) | None specific | Both segments must be Ethiopian metal, no codeshares | 2026-07-09 |
| Azores Airlines | Stay in São Miguel and/or Terceira | 7 nights | Free (airfare) | No | Before you pay, at booking | N/A (nights-based) | Gateways: Boston, Toronto, Montreal, Oakland | Every segment must be Azores Airlines; ask before you pay, not after | 2026-07-09 |
| Lufthansa (new, 2026) | Stay in Munich | 7 days | Surcharge may apply depending on route; not confirmed fully free | No (partner discounts on hotel/car/tours only) | During booking, via Lufthansa's dedicated stopover page | Not publicly specified | Launched specifically for flights from 10 US cities (incl. Boston, JFK, LAX, ORD, SFO) and Singapore | Brand new: exact surcharge rules and launch date not yet confirmed in an official source we could fetch directly | 2026-07-09 |
| JAL / Japan | No branded program; multi-city fare rules + Japan Explorer Pass domestic fares | Fare-rule dependent | Neither: fare-rule loophole, not a perk | No | N/A, it's a booking technique | N/A | None; award routing (JMB/oneworld) allows 3-7 stopovers | Most blogs invent a "JAL stopover program" that doesn't exist | 2026-07-09 |
Honorable mention, not an airline program: the free (mostly) Seoul layover tours at Incheon (ICN) belong to the airport, not to Korean Air or any single carrier. Any airline's transit passengers with a layover of 24 hours or less qualify. See the full Incheon breakdown for the current tour lineup and the 2026 e-Arrival Card requirement.
Best if you want a free hotel and nothing else to plan
Turkish Airlines. Book a round-trip through Istanbul with a 20+ hour connection, request it 72 hours out, and Turkish puts you in a real 4-star (5-star in Business) at no cost. Ethiopian Airlines is the other pick here: an 8-24 hour Addis connection gets you a free room, meals and transfers, no request form, just ask at check-in.
Best for a real second vacation, not just a longer layover
Copa Airlines wins on raw days: up to 15 in Panama, at no extra airfare, as long as you request it when you buy the ticket. TAP Air Portugal is the runner-up at 10 nights in Lisbon or Porto, with the added trick of a 25% domestic-flight discount that can turn one country into the Azores or Madeira too.
Best value if "free" isn't the point, "cheap" is fine
Qatar Airways. The stopover isn't free, but $14 a night for a 4-star hotel in Doha (with a genuinely free 96-hour transit visa on top) is hard to beat on a per-dollar basis. Nobody else on this list gets you a 5-star-with-beach-access room for $31.
Best for points and miles travelers
Skip the cash-fare programs entirely and look at award rules. Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer allows a free stopover on Saver awards (two on Advantage awards, up to 30 days). JAL Mileage Bank allows up to 3 stopovers on its own awards, 7 on oneworld multi-carrier awards, more flexibility than any paid-fare program on this page.
