Emirates layover in Dubai: which rules apply to yours?

What happens on an Emirates layover in Dubai depends on how long it is:

The key word in the middle row is "shortest." Dubai Connect exists for passengers whose best available connection is a long one. It is not a way to turn a short connection into a free night. For what a connection can fit if you head into the city, see our Dubai layover guide.

How it works

Timing and fare are the two conditions that trip up most bookings, on top of the ticket, passport and visa rules below. The timing: your Dubai connection must be 6-26 hours AND be the shortest connection available for your route. You cannot cherry-pick a longer layover to force eligibility, and Emirates says the booking flow tells you whether you qualify. The fare, for Premium Economy and Economy: your base fare plus carrier surcharge must clear the minimum Emirates sets for your region, with separate one-way and return thresholds (check the current figures on emirates.com). Check your fare against the threshold before you count on the room; low promotional fares can fall below it.

Meet every condition and Emirates covers the hotel, the meals that fall within your stay, coach transfers both ways, and a complimentary 48-hour visa if your nationality needs one. Nationalities that need a visa should have it prearranged at least 48 hours before arrival; others may get it on arrival, subject to UAE immigration. US travelers: check current UAE entry rules for your passport before you fly, since Emirates' terms put travel documents, and their cost, on the passenger. Emirates' terms also say some passports are ineligible because UAE immigration will not process their visa applications, and no entry means no Dubai Connect.

How to claim it, step by step

1. Book your Emirates itinerary on one ticket. Check that the Dubai connection falls in the window and that both flights are operated by Emirates.
2. Go to Manage Booking, log in with your surname and booking reference, and choose Dubai Connect. Emirates' page says to add it at least 12 hours before your flight to Dubai, and a note on the same page says bookings are accepted only up to 24 hours before that flight departs. Do it early and neither number matters. If a travel agency issued your ticket, you can still add Dubai Connect yourself in Manage Booking, using the booking reference on your confirmation. Emirates grants it, not the agency. If you booked through an Emirates office, use Emirates' official contact list on emirates.com, or add it online with your booking reference.
3. Save the Dubai Connect confirmation from Manage Booking and bring it with you.
4. On landing: clear immigration, then find the Dubai Connect desk in Arrivals for your hotel and transfer.

What's free and what's not

Free: room, meals, transfers, visa (when required). Not free: anything you do in Dubai, minibar, spa and dining extras. The hotel may ask for a credit card at check-in to cover them. And do not count on getting a room at the airport: Emirates says to book Dubai Connect in advance, and it is subject to availability.

Where people screw this up

• Low base fare, no perk. In Economy and Premium Economy the fare floor is measured on base fare plus carrier surcharge, not the total with taxes.
• Booking the longer connection on purpose. It must be the shortest available connection for your route.
• Codeshares. Both flights must be operated by Emirates. A flight where Emirates is only the marketing carrier does not count. flydubai-operated flights count only when they are sold by Emirates, use Terminal 3, and at least one part of the trip is on an Emirates-operated flight, and those itineraries face their own minimum fare.
• A passport close to expiry. Emirates' terms require at least 6 months (180 days) of validity for every passport, whatever the nationality.
• Teenagers traveling solo. Passengers under 18 can only use Dubai Connect when traveling with an adult.

FAQ

Does it work from the US?

Yes. The Americas appear in Emirates' fare table, with one-way and return thresholds for Economy and Premium Economy.

Award tickets?

Emirates' Dubai Connect terms do not address award tickets. If you are flying on Skywards miles, check eligibility in Manage Booking before you plan around the free night.

Can I pick the JW Marriott?

No. Emirates assigns the hotel and does not guarantee the property, location or star rating.
